Indications for nitroglycerin

It is used to prevent and treat acute angina, to treat chronic angina, and to treat left ventricular failure. Injectable nitroglycerin is used to control blood pressure during some surgeries and to reduce bleeding into the surgical site. Injectable nitroglycerin is used as an adjunct in the treatment of congestive heart failure every month with acute myocardial infarction.

Pharmacokinetics of nitroglycerin

Binding of this drug to protein is about 60%. The half-life of nitroglycerin is 1-4 minutes. The effect of the drug by intravenous infusion begins almost immediately, sublingually after 30 minutes. The duration of action of the drug is a few minutes by intravenous infusion, 30-60 minutes by sublingual and 8-24 hours by skin. Nitroglycerin is excreted by the kidneys after being almost completely metabolized.

Contraindications to the use of nitroglycerin

The injectable form of this drug should not be used in cases of cardiac tamponade, constrictive pericarditis, recent head injury, and cerebral hemorrhage.
