Indications

Salmeterol is a direct-acting sympathomimetic that has beta-adrenoceptor stimulatory activity and selective activity relative to beta-2 receptors (a beta-2 agonist). Acts as a bronchodilator when inhaled. The onset of action is after 10 to 20 minutes, but its full effect may not appear until regular dosing of several doses. Unlike short-acting beta-2 agonists (see salbutamol), salmeterol is not suitable for relieving symptoms in an acute attack of bronchospasm. It is a long-acting drug with a duration of activity of about 12 hours and is useful when a long-acting beta-2 agonist is needed, for example in stable reversible airway obstruction, such as chronic asthma or in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Becomes. It may be helpful in cases of nocturnal asthma attacks and exercise-induced asthma attacks. However, in these cases, the use of short agonists with beta-2 effect and anti-inflammatory treatment should be continued. Salmeterol is taken in the form of xinafoate and the prescribed doses are expressed in equivalent amounts of salmeterol. 1.45 micrograms of salmetrol xinafoate is approximately equivalent to one microgram of salmetrol. The usual dose of 2 salmeterol 25 micrograms is twice a day from the spray and if necessary up to 100 micrograms twice a day can be inhaled. Alternatively, a dry powder form of 50 micrograms may be inhaled or, if necessary, 100 micrograms twice daily. In children 4 years of age and older, 50 micrograms of inhaled salmeterol can be given twice daily.
